Welcome to my blog.  As a dentist, I'm often asked a lot of questions about oral health from patients, friends, colleagues, and family.  I receive a lot of dental information by mail, subscription, and emails.  I also attend a lot of dental courses.  Being an affiliate instructor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, I am in constant constant with world renowed faculties, specialists, and dentists.  I hope to gather as much information from different sources and to share them with you and provide you with interesting and useful information about your oral health.  If there is anything you want to ask me, please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. I hope everyone is having a great year so far.  To my patients, thank you again for trusting my staff and me with your dental care.  Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

I have been asked by many patients wanting to remove their existing amalgam/silver filling and to replace them with tooth colored material (composite).  One of their reasons is that amalgam is toxic since it contains mercury.  It is true that amalgam contains mercury, but the amount is so low that it does not pose any health risk to patients.  There is a lot of information out there on the Internet; however, I would only trust information from respectable sites (.gov or .edu).  Here is a good scientific article about amalgam for your reading pleasure (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3388771/).  Even though we do not use amalgam at our practice, amalgam is a good material with a long dental history.  The main disadvantage of amalgam is esthetic.  If there is no recurrence caries and the amalgam is not fractured, I would recommend that you leave it alone.  If esthetic is of great important to you, then replacing amalgam fillings could be justified.  However, if your main reason is that amalgam is toxic, I would recommend that you reconsider.  Ultimately, the choice of replacing amalgam is yours to make.
