When patients tell me that they do not want fluoride, I respect their decision and often asked them why.  Recently, a patient told me that fluoride is toxic and is used in rat poison.  Yes, fluoride is indeed used in some rat poison, but to blankly claim it as toxic is wrong.  At a high enough level of quantity and concentration, any substances can be toxic, such as water.  There is such a thing as water toxicity.  The amount and concentration of fluoride in water and toothpaste is extremely low and is not toxic.  In my opinion, fluoride is an important weapon in combating tooth decay, especially fluorinated water.  The best study was done in Grand Rapid, Michigan.  Here’s the link to that study (http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/oralhealth/Topics/Fluoride/TheStoryofFluoridation.htm).  I know that I cannot change all of my patients’ feeling about fluoride, but that is not my goal.  My goal is to just inform them, have them make their own decision, and respect their decision.

I am sure by now, you might have heard about an article from the NYT on how flossing is overrated and doesn't help with maintaining the health of your teeth (click here for the article).  I strongly disagree.  Flossing with prevent gingivitis, which could lead to periodontitis (i.e bone loss).  Flossing is one of the least expensive dental treatment.  All I can say is that if you don't floss, you will end up spending more on maintaining your teeth than if you do floss.  Here are some links to articles, stating that flossing is helpful in maintaining dental health (https://www.perio.org/consumer/AAP-recommends-flossing-as-essential & https://www.perio.org/consumer/AAP-recommends-flossing).  If you're still not convinced and don't want to listen to dental professionals, you might want to listen to Steve Harvey, a comedian  ( click here to see the video).
